Steps to Handle Texas Traffic Ticket
Texas allows for one traffic ticket in a 12 month period to be dismissed if you complete a defensive driving course. You must receive permission from the court to complete the Defensive Driving course in order to have the points dismissed, so please contact the court prior to registering for the course.
3 Options to Satisfy a Traffic Ticket in Texas:
- Complete a Defensive Driving Course: This option will help you avoid points on your driving record and prevents and insurance rate increase as a result of the ticket.
- Pay Traffic Ticket: Pay the fine without attending traffic school. This option will result in points being added to your Texas driver record.
- Request a Court Date for a hearing before the judge to contest the charge. If the judge finds that you have committed the violation the points will be added to your driving record.

* Remember you cannot use a certificate from a defensive driving course you had previously attended. You must complete the course after you had received the traffic ticket violation on your driver record.
There are a few exceptions for attending a defensive driving course online:
- You must not have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- You must admit guilt and sign the statement that you do not content the ticket.
- If cited for speeding, you must not have been driving more than 25 MHP over the posted speed limit.
